This is an internationally recognized, third-party verification system that ensures the identity, potency, and quality of mānuka honey. UMF™ graded products have been tested for three signature compounds that are all needed to ensure the honey is real mānuka honey made from Leptospermum scoparium flowers: Leptosperin, DHA (Dihydroxyacetone) and Methylglyoxal (MGO). Does it come in a glass jar or is that jar plastic?

Flora M?nuka Honey are bottled in 100% recyclable, food grade BPA-free PET jars. That makes them rare among our products as not being bottled in glass. In this case, we partner with a sustainable, 100% M?ori-owned honey operation in New Zealand. Like Flora, they certainly care about human and environmental health, and are the winner of several prestigious farming and eco-friendly awards.

The reason we all chose to go with PET material was multifold. One of the primary considerations is the nature of the honey. It is a coveted, highly valued, extremely rare, labour intensive product to collect and requires specialized knowledge to handle, test and grade it and time to age it.

For all these reasons, it is already expensive compared to other honey. Glass is not only a lot heavier, which would increase the shipping costs, and reduce export quantities, but it would require an investment on our partner's end in specific filling equipment for Flora, and the purchase of glass bottles which come in such large lot sizes that it would necessitate its own warehouse to store them in, which would raise the cost of our product drastically compared the others.

We also know that based on shipping all our other glass-bottled products, the losses of product and clean up required can really add up. Usually, if one bottle in a palette breaks, the whole palette must be destroyed. Our experience of our use of glass bottles for our other products teaches us that the financial cost and the irreplaceable nature of the product would not make sense for anyone involved given the current projections and system, if we used glass.

Since we choose not to minimize costs elsewhere, using PET and taking care to handle and ship it with care is at this time in the best interest of our retail and consumer customers.
