About UMF™

Flora Mānuka Honey is licensed by the Unique Mānuka Factor Honey Association™ in New Zealand. This is an internationally recognized, third-party verification system that ensures the identity, potency, and quality of mānuka honey. UMF™ graded products have been tested for three signature compounds that are all needed to ensure the honey is real mānuka honey made from Leptospermum scoparium flowers: Leptosperin, DHA (Dihydroxyacetone) and Methylglyoxal (MGO). The higher the UMF™ grading number on the product, the higher the concentration of signature compounds found in mānuka honey. UMF™ is a quality trademark. The UMF™ grading system appraises natural markers found in Mānuka honey and assures purity and quality. Please see www.umf.org.nz

What does 515+ and 30+ mean on the manuka honey jars?

FloraHealth USA

Hi Silvia,
Thanks for asking.

Flora Manuka Honey has a UMF rating, an MGO strength level, has a NF chip to track its source and verify its testing and is certified by the MPI of New Zealand.

You're referring to the UMF Rating (such as 15+ UMF) and MGO Grade Level (such as 515+ MGO).

UMF graded products have been 3rd party tested for three signature compounds that are all needed to ensure the honey is real m?nuka honey: Leptosperin, Dihydroxyacetone, and Methylglyoxal. The higher the UMF grading number on the product, the higher the concentration of signature compounds found in m?nuka honey.

Methylglyoxal (also called MGO) is formed in the honey from DHA, dihydroxyacetone, an ingredient found in m?nuka nectar. This compound is responsible for some of m?nuka honeys unique antibacterial properties and is measured for the UMF grading system. The higher the MGO number, the higher the grade or strength of m?nuka honey, but seeing an MGO strength and not seeing a UMF rating could mean the honey is not authentic manuka.

100 MGO is kind of the starting point for real manuka, the entry level, because only honey with at least 100+MGO can be considered pure manuka/monofloral, as lower grades probably indicate a mixed honey from many kinds of flowers (multifloral).
For that reason, we consider the 30 MGO manuka blend to be more of an introduction to this type of honey. It can be used as table honey, and provides you with a good sense of the colour, taste, texture and thickness of manuka honey for a price more typical of other honey.

However, if you want to use the honey to soothe your skin or a sore throat or stomach, I would suggest trying the stronger ones to see what the fuss is about.

Scanning the tag on the jar with a smart phone will allow you to see its Certificate of Analysis, learn about its origins and verify its strength.

We use a + sign to indicate a minimum, but they can be anything above that. For example, the testing certificate from a jar that says 400+ may actually tell you that it was shown to have 485 MGO at the time of testing, and MGO levels are known to increase over time as well, even after testing.

This is one thing that sets the 515+ apart from the others - it was selected for aging, in order to develop stronger MGO levels. So, like a fine cheese or wine, experts were needed to help to bring that honey to you.

I hope that helps.
Best,
Flora Health
